Soul For Sale

Super excited to read “Soul for Sale,” a story about a dude in advertising who is struggling to deal with the fact that he is in advertising. At least I think I’m excited about reading it. I’ve heard people talk about it, but the most substantial info I can find is on this Facebook page.

Let me know if you know anything.

Oh, and if you Google “Soul For Sale” you’ll get a guy who is actually trying to sell his soul on Craigslist. I wonder what a good soul is going for these days. Too bad I sold mine for a Moon Pie when I was 13.

Ad Dads and their Daughters are the Cutest Thing Ever

by Rachel Timmerman at 1:04 pm 3 Comments

I’ve recently come to the conclusion that advertising dads and their daughters are the cutest thing ever. I just imagine the poor moms standing on the sidelines, unable to totally relate. Left to merely behold the mind-crushingly adorable antics that occur between them.

Exhibit A: “Kittens, Inspired by Kittens!”

If you haven’t seen this you must be living in the 9th circle of hell. Fallon dad lovingly edits his daughter’s commentary on her favorite book about kittens. So cute it will make you want to put your head through a wall.

Exhibit B: “Tiny Art Director”

And now THIS. Ad dad takes “briefs” from his four-year-old little girl on what she’d like him to draw and then humbly complies to her fiery criticisms. As if this wasn’t enough cuteness for one blog, drawings are for sale with proceeds going to the kid’s college fund. She’s going to RISD in 2023 for crying out loud. That’s adorable!

I got this email from MediaPost today. Desperately hoping it’s an email from 2004 that somehow accidentally got sent out again.

Ogilvy Talks A Little Too Much About Advertising

by Rachel Timmerman at 2:00 pm No Comments

The folks over at Ogilvy London put this little ditty together to give outsiders a glimpse into a life in advertising. Go ahead. Watch it.

Now here’s the big question. If your young self saw this back when you were considering advertising as a viable career option would this pique your interest or send you bolting away in a fit of panic? The jury is still out for me, but I get the sense that I at least would have given more thought to my back-up career choice of dentistry.

Challenge of the day: Count all the levels on which this can be described as “so wrong.”

I know this is supposed to be funny, but it’s not. It’s terrifyingly accurate and it makes me feel like I might throw up.

An Intervention

Hey Geico. We’re over your cavemen. We also suspect they stopped selling car insurance in 2006.

We would, however, like to see more of that giant Cabbage Patch Kid.

Most of us are painfully aware that the award season is upon us. This is an excruciating time of year for people like me, the non-creative. I may not be one of those fancy art directors or witty copywriters, but I do work relentlessly and passionately for my agency’s clients and the good of their businesses. You’d think the gratification for a job well done would be enough to satisfy me, but it’s not. This time of year I find myself lusting after Lions and the like.

Given all of this you can imagine my delight when a friend sent me this link. This year the Radio Advertising Bureau is on my side. They’ve set up a virtual recording studio where I can create my very own :30 spot. The best part is this. The best, funniest, most inventive spot created will win a FOR REAL IN REAL LIFE RADIO MERCURY AWARD!

Oh, I’m on it.

Thanks, Radio Advertising Bureau. Sure, we all know the reason you’re doing this is because it’s been a steady march to the grave since “Real American Heroes” circa 2002, but that’s beside the point. The point is you’ve managed to figure out that you need to give non-creatives some time in the sun. Media planners in particular. We all know they’re the only ones who can save you now.
