Ogilvy Talks A Little Too Much About Advertising

by Rachel Timmerman at 2:00 pm No Comments

The folks over at Ogilvy London put this little ditty together to give outsiders a glimpse into a life in advertising. Go ahead. Watch it.

Now here’s the big question. If your young self saw this back when you were considering advertising as a viable career option would this pique your interest or send you bolting away in a fit of panic? The jury is still out for me, but I get the sense that I at least would have given more thought to my back-up career choice of dentistry.

The Best Soap On Spaceship Earth

If you’re reading this and have never tried Dr. Bronner’s “Magical” Hemp Peppermint Pure-Castille Soap I’m here to tell you that you’re missing out. Big Time. That tingly peppermint silky lather ranks up there as one of the best all-natural sensations known to mankind, best described as 1,000 baby angles all breathing on your skin at the same time.

The product itself is a wonder, but perhaps even more impressive is the fact that the brand has stayed true to itself and its ideals despite mass distribution in stores like Target and Whole Foods. From the web site to the packaging everything has remained exactly the same.

I did some research on Dr. Bronner only to discover that he’s pretty damn close to being what most people would consider clinically crazy. That assumption may bear some truth as he was at one point admitted into an insane asylum only to eventually escape to California to continue his life’s mission.

His is such a mind-blowing story that documentary filmmaker Sara Lamm created a film about his life. It’s been said by critics that it “out-weirds fiction.” Can’t wait to see it.

Here’s the trailer. (Sorry Embedding was disabled here, but it’s worth the click through)

What We’re Listening To

I’m totally obsessed with Jace Everett. Not only is “Bad Things” the hottest f’ing song that’s ever entered my ear holes; it’s the theme for “True Blood,” the hottest f’ing show on TV.

His whole damned self-titled album is good. Provided you enjoy a little country from time to time.

Oh, and just for funsies, here’s some instruction for the 64-count country line dance inspired by “Bad Things.” I’m willing to bet you can think of a much sexier way to dance to this song. If not, you wouldn’t know sensuality if it bit you on the ass.

When Ads Attack

If I ran into this freakish thing on the street I’d probably run away as fast as possible. It’s a bus shelter equipped with a hidden motion sensor that assaults unsuspecting pedestrians with pterodactyl-like screams of Japanese teens and blinding flashbulb lights. It’s for a Swedish TV show called “Big In Japan,” but that hardly matters.

The only thing fathomably worse than this would be a bus shelter that mugs people and takes all their money. Oh, maybe “CSI” should look into that.

On Selling Toilet Paper.

Every time I see this spot I can’t help but think about the people that made it, but not as their current adult selves. I like to think of them as children. I imagine their teacher asking them what they want to be when they grow up and can only assume their doe-eyed response would be this:

“I want be an embarrassment to my family and shame the legacy of my name forever.”

These spots are beyond disgraceful. They’re unfathomably disgusting. For the love of God it’s a commercial about dingleberries. DINGLEBERRIES!

Ah, yes. The dreaded “Bread Face.” We’re definitely going to want to avoid that.

The thing about this video is that it will make you want to throw up, but you will automatically feel cooler than everybody else just by watching it.

I know this is supposed to be funny, but it’s not. It’s terrifyingly accurate and it makes me feel like I might throw up.
